Within a fortnight of coming out of hospital, Sonam Kapoor was back on the Mausam sets getting drenched to the skin for two nights in a row. How did dad Anil Kapoor, and the doctors who had attended to her, allow it?
"They didn’t know and when dad learnt about it, he was like, ‘Your health is in your hands!’ But it was an expensive set that had been standing too long. I couldn’t let it get dismantled without shooting my portions. The producer had already suffered losses when I fell ill, I couldn’t look the other way," reasons the actor, presently trotting up mountains in freezing Switzerland for the Shahid Kapoor starrer Mausam.
Her recent bout of professionalism has earned her the admiration of co-star Shahid, and sparked off great on-screen chemistry. "Both Shahid and I are reserved, so it took us a while to open up. That was misconstrued because in this industry, it’s unheard of for co-stars to get along," she quips.
Sonam has got three days off from the Mausam schedule to attend the Cannes Film Festival. She will be at the French Riviera for a day on May 15 as L’Oreal’s brand ambassador.
"Last year, I couldn’t go because I was filming Thank You in Toronto. This year, Pankaj sir (director Pankaj Kapoor) has agreed to shoot with Shahid for three days so I can be on the red carpet. Ash (Aishwarya Bachchan) will be at the opening night gala and Freida (Pinto) will be there for the AIDS cause on May 19," she informs.
Was it intentional to keep the three beauties apart so egos and tempers are not ruffled? "May 15 is the only day I could give them and I think that’s the case with Ash and Freida too. All three of us are busy with hectic schedules," she adds.
Meanwhile, back home, Sonam’s appearance on Koffee With Karan continues to make news. After Rishi Kapoor’s public ire over her comments on son Ranbir, it’s Sonam’s mentor, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who’s taken offense to her comment that he must add other colours to his life apart from black and blue. "I’ve grown up in front of Chintu uncle (Rishi Kapoor). Sanjay sir is my mentor who says I’m like his daughter. I respect them and would never intentionally upset them," she asserts.
Pointing out that the comments were made in jest, she adds, "I’ve never said anything I needed to apologise for. In fact, given what people say about me, I should be ranting too. I’d spoken to Sanjay sir after appearing on the show. Recently, I even wished him on his birthday. For me, Koffee With Karan is water under the bridge, I don’t know why it’s being raked up after all this time."
Rishi Kapoor has since started shooting for Karan Johar’s Agneepath. Will Sonam sign another movie with Sanjay and Ranbir? She retorts, "I hold no grudges. And if good cinema comes along, I’ll work with anyone."
