Filmmaker Punit Malhotra, who worked with Sonam Kapoor in his directorial debut, I Hate Luv Storys, has shot down reports that Sonam was the original choice for the female lead in his upcoming movie, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein.
“Sonam (Kapoor) being considered for the film is a rumour that started somewhere... She was never officially approached for the film,” informs Punit.
Produced by filmmaker Karan Johar, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein stars Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead. The film is scheduled to release on November 22.
The 31-year-old director says Imran took about six months to come on board for the project. “I wrote the script keeping Imran in mind. But, when I took the film to Imran he refused to do it because he had some problems with the rural setting of the film. In the first narration, he liked my film. Then I took the film elsewhere and it didn’t work out either,” he says.
Punit further says, “I again went to Imran and made him hear the first narration. He liked it and stepped back. I was so angry because he had ruined six months of my life.”
Having started his career as an assistant director to Karan Johar, Amol Palekar, Nikhil Advani and Tarun Mansukhani, Punit made his debut as a director with the 2010 romantic film, I Hate Luv Storys. When asked about his fascination for romantic films, Punit says, “Love stories come very naturally to me. But I promise that my next project won’t be a love story. I got so hooked on this story that I don’t know how many drafts I wrote and finally decided to direct it one day.”
Punit’s next is a drama titled Gutka, which stars actor Akshay Kumar in the lead. “It’s a drama and a completely different film from the others that I have made so far. It’s too early to talk about it. We are at a very nascent stage now. And, we haven’t finalised the leading lady yet,” he says.
