Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express (CE) that chugged out on Friday, August 9, the auspicious occasion of Eid, earned an unprecedented Rs 33.12 crore on the very first day, despite tepid reviews from critics.
The figure leaves no doubt that director Rohit Shetty has held on to his moniker of a ‘Rs100 crore director’ — a title that he earned through his last hits Bol Bachchan (2012), Singham (2011) and Golmaal 3 (2010).
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh reveals that the money flow started a day before CE released. “The paid previews on Thursday, August 7, grossed Rs 6.75 crore. The movie made Rs 33.12 crore on Friday in India only. So in total, it made Rs 39.87 crore, which has shattered all the previous records,” says Taran.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra is certain that CE will touch the Rs100 mark in four days. “If not over the weekend, then in four days it should make Rs 100 crore. That is unless there is a drastic fall in the collections in these two days,” says Amod. Ask him if he foresees a drop in the earnings and he says, “There could be a very small fall in the collections on Saturday as it wasn’t a bank holiday.”
