Though the art of handmade movie posters is vanishing and they are being replaced by their printed versions, they are still much in demand by many Bollywood fans and tourists. “Foreigners love these movie posters. They are fascinated with the bright colours and postures,” says Ranjit Singh of Bollywood Posters. Check out some places in the city where you can buy cinema posters.

It only keeps original Bollywood posters, which it has sourced from movie halls and collectors. Some of the original posters here are decades old. Though most of the posters here are the machine printed ones, the store also has a good variety of hand-painted posters as well. "The older movie posters come for Rs 1,000 and the new ones can be purchased for Rs 500. Some of the hot selling posters here are of films such as Sholay, Mughal E Azam, and, Mother India. Not only this, we also keep original film cards that you get inside the movie halls," says Balkishan of Indian Popular Art.

Cinema Posters

They have vintage film posters, both from Bollywood and Hollywood. The collection of originals here are more than 35 years old. Here, the lowest price of the posters starts at Rs 500 for a Bollywood film. The rates also depend upon the popularity of the movie. They also have a big collection of vintage posters that are more expensive (Rs 3,000 onwards). Some of the most popular posters include that of Charlie Chaplin and James Bond. Some of the sizes of the posters that are available here are 30 by 40 inches and banner size.

Apart from film posters, this shop also sells books, paintings and maps. They sell printed posters that start from a price range of Rs 500 and goes up to Rs 3,000, depending upon the work and the actors on the posters. “The hottest sellers are movie posters with Amitabh Bachchan, Guru Dutt and Raj Kapoor,” says Deepak Jain of the store. They also have a collection of hand-painted show cards and movie cards (Rs 2,000 onwards).

Bollywood posters

Their USP is custom made hand-painted posters. “We make Bollywood style colourful posters and portraits,” says Vijay Kumar, who runs the business. They take around two weeks to deliver the final product. They make three kinds of sizes of posters, from two feet to six feet, which are priced between Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000. The most popular poster here is that of the film, Om Shanti Om, as people can get their faces put in the bodies of actors Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.

For those who don’t have the time to go to the market, there is also an online portal, from which, you can buy all kinds of Bollywood film posters. “We are trying to revive the old art of hand-painted Bollywood posters. We are working with the artists who make Bollywood movie posters and billboards. These artists paint vintage posters, which are basically hand-painted replicas,”says Hinesh Jethwani, the owner of the site. “We also offer memorabilia. In this, we sell original vintage posters, which we have sourced from collectors and movie halls that have closed down. The collection starts from the era of silent movies. The posters are available from Rs 1,000 onwards. There cannot be a price fixed on original vintage posters,” he adds.
