Rajkumar Gupta based his film No One Killed Jessica — one of the biggest successes this year — in Delhi, but the filmmaker says he is yet to understand the city.
Gupta was in town to attend the screening of his film at the Hindustan Times New Delhi 100 film festival on Saturday. “I have stayed in Delhi for four years but I have never been able to understand the city. You will see my personal experience in the way the city is introduced in the film,” said Gupta, a graduate of Delhi University’s Ramjas College.
The filmmaker was accompanied by actor Myra, who played Jessica in the film based on the 1999 murder of Jessica Lal. “A lot of people don’t know my name. They call me Jessica. After the film, some people even called me ‘ghost’ because Jessica is dead and here I am in front of them,” said Myra.
In conversation with HT City editor Sonal Kalra at PVR Rivoli, Gupta confessed that he had to try hard to convince Myra to do the film. “I told her I’ll make the film only if you say yes,” he said. Speaking about the movie, Myra said, “Shooting the scene where I get shot was quite unnerving because it struck me then that this is what she (Jessica Lal) must have gone through.”
The film starred actors Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji and rumours were rife that there were cat-fights on the sets. However, Gupta dismisses them: “They shot together for only three days and were busy with their own work.”
He may not understand Delhi, but the filmmaker is keen to set his next projects in the city too. “It will of course depend on the script, but Delhi has become a model city and I’d be happy to show more of the city.”
