It’s a story as old as any in Bollywood — film-makers zero in on an actor, there are celebratory toasts raised all around, and then the news comes that he or she has been replaced by someone else. It’s happened notably with Shah Rukh Khan taking Aamir Khan’s place in Darr (1993), Sanjay Dutt replacing the original Munna Bhai Shah Rukh, Anil Kapoor filling in SRK’s shoes in Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and Salman Khan playing the lead instead of SRK in Ek Tha Tiger (2012).
It’s no longer a secret that Sushant Singh Rajput will not star in Abhishek Kapoor’s next, Fitoor. The 27-year-old made his Bollywood debut earlier this year with Kapoor’s Kai Po Che, but has dropped out of the director’s next due to date problems. Within a couple of days, Aditya Roy Kapur’s name was being heard as a possible replacement. An insider close to the project also reveals that Aditya is among “several other youngsters” who are in the running for the adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic, Great Expectations, which also stars Katrina Kaif.
In another such occurrence, Ranveer Singh claimed that he was supposed to be part of Bombay Velvet, in which Ranbir Kapoor has replaced him.
We take a look at more such recent cases.
Out: Ranveer Singh In: Ranbir Kapoor
Film: Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet
The story: In the beginning, it was rumoured that Aamir Khan was to star in Bombay Velvet. But Ranveer has now made a
startling revelation in an interview that he was supposed to star with Anushka Sharma in Anurag’s ambitious venture. Apparently, he and Anurag tried working things out, but couldn’t because Ranveer had committed dates to Ram-Leela.
Out: Kareena Kapoor In: Priyanka Chopra
Film: Zoya Akhtar’s yet-untitled next
The story: Reportedly, Zoya wanted to cast real-life cousins Ranbir and Kareena but it did not work out. Ranbir backed out first. He was replaced by Ranveer, but Kareena then reportedly opted out because she was not sure about playing Ranveer’s older sister. Now, Priyanka and Ranveer are doing the same roles. The film apparently revolves around the bond shared by siblings.
Out: Hrithik Roshan In: Sushant Singh Rajput
Film: Shekhar Kapur’s Paani
The story: For a long time, it was assumed that Hrithik was set to star in Kapur’s project. It was also rumoured that Hollywood star Kristen Stewart would star opposite him. But a few days ago, Sushant was officially roped in for the part. “Sushant is one of the most inspiring young actors to emerge out of India. It’s going to be an exciting collaboration with him,” Kapur has said.
Out: Jacqueline Fernandez In: Esha Gupta
Film: Sajid Khan’s Humshakals
The story: Reportedly, a few days after Sajid and Jacqueline’s alleged break-up, the Sri Lankan beauty was replaced by the Raaz 3 (2012) actor, Esha, in Sajid’s project, which also stars Saif Ali Khan. As per rumour mills, Sajid did not want his ex-flame in his project and roped in Esha instead, who, coincidentally, had replaced Jacqueline in Vikram Bhatt’s Raaz 3 as well.
Out: Sonakshi Sinha In: Shruti Haasan
Film: Anees Bazmee’s Welcome Back
The story: Sonakshi Sinha was apparently finalised for the film. However, her dates were clashing with Prabhu Dheva’s next, Action Jackson, starring Ajay Devgn. So Bazmee brought Shruti on board. “We were considering a lot of names, but no one was finalised. Shruti is the chosen one since she fits the bill,” Bazmee said in an earlier interview to HT Café.
