Bollywood veteran actor Pran died on Friday evening at the age of 93 in a Mumbai hospital due to a prolonged illness. Following is how his life unfolded:

1920: Pran Krishan Sikand is born on April 12 in Ballimaran, Old Delhi, to Kewal Krishan, a civil engineer, and Rameshwari.

1940: Gets first break in a Punjabi film, Yamla Jat, due to a chance meeting with its writer

1942: Shoots for Khandaan, his first film as romantic hero opposite a much younger Noor Jehan. Because of age difference, she stands on bricks for close-ups

1945: Marries Shukla Ahluwahlia.

1948: Arrives in Bombay, works in Delmar Hotel on Marine Drive, re-starts film career

1948: Gets Ziddi with the help of writer Saadat Hassan Manto and actor Shyam. The film launches Dev Anand as hero; by 1950 Pran is established as premier villain.

1950-60: Has the pick of villainous roles in Madhumati, Aah, Rajkumar, Ram aur Shyam, Jis Desh mein Ganga behti Hai, Kashmir ki Kali

1967: With the role of Malang chacha, a war hero, in Manoj Kumar’s Upkaar, moves towards positive roles

1990: Declines roles due to age-related problems. Pran's legs had begun to shiver in 1997 so his character in Mrityudaata was modified to justify his legs shivering

1996: Shoots for Tere Mere Sapne, his last film

2001: Conferred the Padma Bhushan

2013: Presented the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 60th National Film Awards function which he was unable to attend

2013: Died on July 12 at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, after prolonged illness. Survived by three children
