He’s almost like family, having done two films with her producer-husband Balki, Cheeni Kum (2007) and Paa (2009), with possibly a third that he’s currently scripting on the way. Yet, it was still a thrill for director Gauri Shinde when actor Amitabh Bachchan agreed to a cameo in her debut film, English Vinglish.

“It’s only a day’s work and we shot in Mumbai,” says Gauri, dismissing speculations that she flew him out to New York to serenade her leading lady Sridevi with the Mr India chartbuster ‘

Kate nahin katti din yeh raat

.’ “There is no singing and dancing, no ode to the past. And no item number either. Mr Bachchan does his own thing but it’s too early to reveal why we absolutely needed him in the film.”

She says as soon as Balki sounded him out, he agreed instantly to the special appearance. And before going on the sets tweeted, “Shooting today with the effervescent Sridevi after eternity almost for R Balki’s wife’s directed film English Vinglish...SriDevi still the same … spontaneous and lovely ..!!” (sic)

Prod her on the encounter between the two superstars who were last seen on screen 18 years ago in Khuda Gawah (1992) and she says, “He was his usual gracious self and she was really excited.”

The film ends a 14-year sabbatical from Hindi cinema for Sridevi and a 16-year self-imposed hibernation from Tamil cinema. It has been shot in two versions that will release simultaneously on October 5. The buzz is that Bachchan had also shot for the Tamil version but his portions were later re-shot and re-dubbed by south star Ajith Kumar who flew down and stayed at his own expense, even refusing payment for the cameo. Gauri refutes the rumours saying, “We did not shoot the Tamil portions with Mr Bachchan. It was always going to be another actor for the south version.”
