Amjad Khan became an iconic villain after Sholay. On his 25th death anniversary, we are telling you the story of how he bagged the role of Gabbar Singh in Sholay.
It’s been 25 years since Amjad Khan’s death. One of the most dreaded villains of the Hindi film history breathed his last on July 27, 1992. One of the finest character actor of his times, Amjad Khan wasn’t the first choice to play Gabbar Singh in director Ramesh Sippy’s magnum opus, Sholay (1975).
Let us tell you the incredible story about how he became the master villain in one of the most iconic Hindi films.
It started when Sippy saw Khan playing an African man in a play in Mumbai. Ramesh Sippy’s sister was Amjad’s co-actor in the play. One day, she invited Ramesh Sippy to watch the play where he realised that Amjad Khan could be the bad guy he was looking for.
Though his physique suited the role he played in Sholay, Khan gained weight later. The actor was desperate to lose weight and did a lot in that direction till he met with a serious accident while driving to Goa from Mumbai. After suffering multiple fractures, the actor would gradually go on to gain weight.
This turned out to be a fatal blow as he had to undergo the treatment for many months and had to take heavy doses of medicine. This all took a toll on his health and he couldn’t lose the weight ever after.
