Born as Pran Kishan Sikand, the actor has essayed all kinds of roles from romantic hero to villain to those of supporting characters. Best known for his roles as a villain, Pran began his career with a villainous role in the Punjabi film Yamla Jat in 1945. He entered Bollywood as a romantic hero in Khandaan opposite Pakistani singer and actor Noor Jahan.
With his Bollywood career spanning over 70 years, Pran has worked in more than 350 films. Here, we bring you his top ten memorable movies.
1. Jis Des Mein Ganga Behti Hain (1960)
Pran played Raaka in RK Films' Jis Des Mein Ganga Behti Hain. The way he mouthed his lines "Tumhara Baap Raaka" became quite popular. This film starred Raj Kapoor in the leading role.
2. Half Ticket (1962)
The veteran actor essayed the villainous role of smuggler Raja Babu in who uses Vijay (Kishore Kumar) to smuggle his diamonds. The movie was a comedy and the best known part is the song Aake Sidhi Lagi Mere Dil Pe Katariya where Kishore Kumar is dressed as a woman and Kishore Kumar and Pran play along the guise trying to woo the 'woman' so he can secure his diamonds.
3. Kashmir Ki Kali (1964)
Pran is Mohan, the forest manager who insists on marrying Champa (Sharmila Tagore) since her father could not pay back his loan.
4. Upkar (1967)
Pran played Malang Chacha in Manoj Kumar's film who keeps reminding Bharat (Manoj Kumar) that he should keep his own interests above those of the world..
5. Pathar Ke Sanam (1967)
Pran essayed another villain Lala Bhagat Ram who forces Taruna's (Waheeda Rehman) father into agreeing to marry her. His dialogue Kyon? Theek hai na theek?’ was a distinct. He would finish his sentence, then puff his cigarette, inhale a pinch of snuff and then say: ‘Kyon? Theek hai na theek?’
6. Zanjeer (Sher Khan) (1973)
Pran's character Sher Khan in Zanjeer has become a legend for friendship and so is the song picturised on him, Yaari Hai Imaan Mera. He plays a reformed gambler who helps Inspector Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) in fighting and defeating the criminals. He wonderfully mouthed dialogues like, "Choron Ke Bhi Usool Hote Hain"
7. Majboor (1974)
Pran plays the good-hearted theif Michael who helps Ravi Khanna(Amitabh Bachchan) in proving his innocence.
8. Kasauti (1974)
Pran played Amitabh Bachchan's friend in this film. The way in which Pran mouthed his dialogue, "Hum Bolega To Bologe Ki Bolta Hai", it was an instant hit with the masses. His unique style of speech remains stuck in the mind.
9. Don (1978)
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner plays Jasjit in this hit Amitabh Bachchan movie. Jasjit fights with the Narang for the coveted Red Diary.
10. Shahenshah (1988)
Pran played the good police officer, Inspector Aslam Khan, who takes care of Vijay to bring him up as a righteous person who fights for the poor and down-trodden.
The actor has received four Filmfare awards of which, Pran refused to accept one. In 1972, Pran refused his Filmfare award for the Best Supporting Actor in Be-Imaan because he felt music composer Ghulam Mohammed deserved a Filmfare award for his songs in Pakeezah.
Pran is also named in CNN-IBN list of Asia's Top 25 actors. He was also awarded Padma Bhushan in 2001. The veteran actor also has Lifetime Achievement Awards from Star Screen, Zee Cine and Filmfare to his honour.
