Karwa Chauth was celebrated with much fanfare across India. On the entertainment front, we got the mandatory photos of Bollywood actresses and star wives dressed in finery and celebrating the festival. As much as that is de rigueur when it comes to celebrating the festival, so is a Twinkle Khanna tweet. Witty and designed to shine the light on why the festival is not really managing to meet its desired aim -- Karwa Chauth is a fast women traditionally keep praying for long life of their husbands -- the tweet has become an annual phenomenon.

Twinkle did not disappoint us. On Sunday, she wrote on Twitter, “Scientists studying longest living mammals, bowhead whales found for a long life what is needed is a slow metabolism & not wives who fast:)”

And last year, she came up with this gem: “These days by 40 u could be on the way to your 2nd marriage so what’s the point of fasting-don’t need the men to last that long anymore:)”

At a recent award function, she spoke about the festival as well. At the Vogue Women Of The Year Awards, Twinkle advised women to stop fasting on Karwa Chauth, explaining: “...On the mortality charts there are 147 countries above us where their men outlive our good old Indian dudes.”

Meanwhile, Ayushmann Khuranna had a sweet gesture for his wife, celebrating his love for her. “Let’s celebrate equality and change this patriarchal tradition. Join her if u can’t dissuade her from fasting. #KarvaChauth.I get slow when I fast. This is not easy. #fasting #KarvaChauth.”

As per the Hindu calendar, Karwa Chauth falls on the Chaturthi in Krishna Paksha of the month of Kartik. On this day, married women fast until moonrise. They offer their prayers to the moon before ending the fast. The festival has been enjoying a special spurt of popularity ever since Bollywood adopted is at its own and films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge celebrated it.
