Cut to today — sequels in the making are seeing changes like never before — an all-new ensemble cast, new directors, male lead replacements and total plot turnabouts.“It’s a good thing because such changes not only bring a fresh feel to the screen but also add new creative perspectives to the story,” says trade ­analyst Atul Mohan.
Tanu Weds Manu Season 2: Kangana in a ­double role
Kangana Ranuat garnered much praise for her role in the 2011 film, Tanu Weds Manu. Probably that’s why the makers decided to give her a double role in Tanu Weds Manu Season 2, which is under production. Then, there’s also buzz that it may be a love triangle. Actor R. Madhavan will be seen reprising his role as the male lead.
Rock On 2: s witching directors
A sequel to the 2008 film, Rock on!!, Rock On 2 will have the male leads — Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal and Purab Kohli — reprising their roles. Interestingly, Shujaat Saudagar has been roped in to direct the sequel, which will release next year. Abhishek Kapoor directed the first one.
Singham 2: Asin to play the leading lady?
The 2011 original starred Ajay Devgn and newcomer Kajal Aggarwal. While Devgn will reprise his role of a cop, buzz is that Kajal has been replaced by actor Asin in the second part, to release on Aug 15. Also, this will not be a remake of Tamil film Singham II.
Welcome Back: an all-new cast
The sequel to Welcome (2007), which will release end of the year, has a lot of new faces — John Abraham will replace Akshay Kumar, and Katrina Kaif will be replaced by Shruti Haasan. Dimple Kapadia and Naseeruddin Shah, who weren’t part of the original, are also on board to play various ­characters in the film.
Ab Tak Chappan 2: Gul Panag as crime reporter
Nana Patekar-starrer Ab Tak Chappan (2004) has two twists. While Gul Panag will be seen ­portraying a crime reporter in the second installment, the sequel, which will release mid-2014, will also reportedly have a new dirctor — Nana Patekar. The ­original was directed by Shimit Amin.
Dostana 2: Kat to take PeeCee’s part
The 2008 ­­romcom ran into controversy thanks to the chemistry between John Abraham and Abhishek Bachhan, and this time, Katrina Kaif is set to replace the original leading lady, Priyanka Chopra, in the under-production film.
No Entry Mein Entry: Salman with 10 heroines
This under-production film is a sequel to the 2005 comedy riot, No Entry. It is making news because actor Salman Khan will reportedly make an entry in the film with 10 heroines! Also, a source says that Esha Deol, who played Salman’s wife in No Entry, will be replaced by actor Esha Gupta in the sequel.
