"I thought it would be a cool film to make in the US, but there, the idea of making a rom-com is a very expensive proposition. Such films are the studios’ domain. If I tried to make it, I wouldn’t be able to sell it unless it was in a quirky space — like Juno (2007) for example," admits producer Uday Chopra, who has extended his family banner to make films in the US.
Uday admits that making an out-and-out rom-com is something I can’t presently do on my own, because it takes a bigger budget.
He adds, "I can co-produce it with a studio, but no one knows me in the US. They will wonder, ‘Who is this upstart from India who is coming and giving me a script? Why would I make it?’"
However, Uday has the English script, set in the US and with local characters. "Maybe I can make it when I have more money, or when my company becomes bigger," he says.
