After memorable outings as a gangster, actor Vivek Oberoi is set to don a cop’s avatar in director Sagar Ballary’s next, Saali Khushi. Written by Saajan Agarwal, the film is a human interest drama set amidst dance bars and the underworld. “It has got funny shades, but it is not a comedy,” say Ballary about the film that is set to go on the floors in May.
The director is trying to get Mallika Sherawat as the female lead. “There are some date issues with Mallika. I hope they will be sorted out soon,” he says.
He also rubbishes speculations that he had paired the two actors for producer-duo Nadir and Nariman Irani’s untitled project that was shelved, and that Vivek and Mallika were then asked to return their signing amounts.
“We never roped in Vivek and Mallika for any other film,” says the Bheja Fry (2007) director. “And since we were never in talks with Mallika, there was no signing amount. I don’t know how such rumours spread.”
Saali Khushi also stars Zakir Hussain, Rajpal Yadav, Abhimanyu Singh, and Sanjay Mishra.“I have got an ensemble cast from the National School of Drama and am happy to work with them,” says Ballary.
The film is being produced by debutant Mukesh Chaudhary under his banner, Street Act Production. Ballary took up the project as he was swayed by the storyline and the star cast.
Ask whether the film has item numbers as well, and he says, “Given the setting of the film, it has four item numbers.”
