Sonam Kapoor, who is currently riding high on the success of her latest release, Khoobsurat, has been hoping to do edgier films. In a recent interview to HT Café, she admitted that she wants to do darker roles, as she hasn’t played a character with grey shades yet. Ask her if she’s open to portraying veteran actresses on screen, and she says she’d love the opportunity.
Without hesitation, she picks Waheeda Rehman as the woman she would want to portray in a film. “I think she’s had an amazing life. I would also be interested in playing Meena Kumari, who had so much drama in her life, and Madhubala. They died too young,” says Sonam, adding that she has been in awe of Rehman for a long time. “We worked together in Delhi 6 (2009). When I looked at her, I would feel, ‘Oh my God, she’s the same woman who was in Pyaasa (1957) and Guide (1965). She was the great film-maker Guru Dutt’s muse,” she says.

Incidentally, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who directed Delhi 6, is now launching Sonam’s brother, Harshvardhan, with a film in 2015. Ask Sonam if she has any advice for her sibling, and she says, “He should just work hard and not think about what his contemporaries — Tiger Shroff, Mohit Marwah, Sooraj Pancholi and whoever else is out there — and what they are doing. As soon as you start doing that, you start losing focus on what’s ahead. Then you become a really cynical, hard person. I’ve see that happen to girls.”
