Actor Shah Rukh Khan is busy looking for a script to make a sequel for his 2011, superhero movie, RA.One. Overjoyed that the film bagged a National Award for special effects, the 46-year-old says, “I’ve invested a lot of time into making this film and have created a technology over nine years. I think it needs to be exploited a little more.”

There’s another reason to why SRK wants to make a sequel. “Perhaps the next film would be cheaper since I now have the technology. But I have to have a story idea first.” The actor-producer further adds, “If Anubhav (Anubhav Sinha, writer-director of RA.One), anyone in my company or even someone from outside comes up with a story idea that can take the thought beyond, I’m game for it. My friends may also send me some scripts.” Last year, even before the film’s release, speculations were rife about a sequel. SRK now confirms that that it would be called G.One and not RA.Two.

While making a sequel to commercially hit movies has been a trend in Bollywood, the industrywallahs feel that a sequel to RA.One, that was not such a big hit may not be a good idea. “I am not sure how many filmmakers would be interested in a sequel to a film that has not done well. It’d be challenging to take forward a story that has not worked earlier,” says director Rajkumar Gupta. Trade analyst Atul Mohan agrees. “It’s a bad idea to think of making a sequel of a movie that was not a big hit.” Producer Ramesh Taurani adds: “More than being a big hit, it is important for the film to be appreciated so that a sequel can be made.”

However, some feel that the sequel may work commercially. “Sequels are generally made because there is money to be made out of extending the same idea. So, if the people think that they can earn some more, then it doesn’t matter how big or small the hit was,” says producer Goldie Behl. Filmmaker Kunal Kohli says, “Certain ideas naturally lend themselves to sequels. So why not use that investment of your time and effort to make a sequel that will take the brand further.”
