On April 28, Shah Rukh Khan delivered his first TED Talk in Vancouver. On May 11, the entire lecture, on humanity, fame and love, was released on TED’s official YouTube page.
“I sell dreams, and I peddle love to millions of people,” says Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood’s biggest star. In this charming, funny talk, Khan traces the arc of his life, showcases a few of his famous dance moves and shares hard-earned wisdom from a life spent in the spotlight, reads the description on the video.
“I’ve also been made to understand that there are lots of you who haven’t seen my work,” opens SRK, “and I feel very sad for you.”
“My friends Chris (TED curator) and Juliet called me here to speak about the future you, and naturally I’m going to speak about the present me.”
In the 17-minute talk, SRK reflected on his youth, growing up in New Delhi, losing both his parents by the time he was in his twenties, and then, moving to the “sprawling metropolis of Mumbai”, to follow his dreams of becoming a movie star.
Shah Rukh then spoke about the impact the Internet has made on his life, specifically his decision in his late 40s to begin using Twitter. “Everything I said took a new meaning. Everything I did, good, bad, ugly, was there for the world to comment upon and judge.”
He went to talk about the time when his then 15-year-old son Aryan’s fake private video was leaked online and how his family dealt with it, the dozens of products he endorses, and the ‘failure’ of his superhero film Ra.One. He followed it up with a quick ‘lungi dance’.
But then, he offered serious advice: “I have realised that whatever moves you, whatever urges you to create, to build, whatever keeps you from failing, whatever helps you survive, is perhaps the oldest, and simplest emotion known to mankind, and that is love,” he said.
TED stands for technology, entertainment, and design. The TED conference organises talks with ‘thinkers’ which last 18 minutes or less, in which the guests share their ideas on their field of expertise.
Before delivering his lecture, SRK, who will host an Indian version of the talks called TED Talks India, had said, “For years, I’ve been a huge fan of TED Talks.”
Of TED Talks India, curator Chris Anderson said in a blog post, “We believe this series will tap into that spirit and bring insight and inspiration to many new minds.”
