Prabhu Dheva has proved his mettle as a director by delivering hits time and again. With multiple projects in hand, his latest is the Shahid Kapoor-starrer R… Rajkumar. In this interview, he talks about his equation with popular actors, his desire to experiment with different genres and the reasons that stop him from doing just that.
All your movies are romantic action dramas. Do you want to try something different soon?
My films have love, dance, romance, drama, comedy — and we Indians love seeing these emotions on screen. Yes, R… Rajkumar is a romantic film with action like the others, but the way it is presented makes it different. I’m too busy right now, but someday I’d like to make a film like The Lord Of The Rings trilogy or even experiment with horror. But producers also need to be ready to make such films (laughs). When big money is at stake, you can’t experiment.
Many A-listers like Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar seem to be waiting for your dates for their films. How does that make you feel?
No…it’s nothing like that (smiles). I am the one who is waiting for them. I want to work with everyone; that’s what makes each and every film exciting.
Was Shahid your first choice for R…Rajkumar?
Once you see the film you will know that he fits the role perfectly. When we write a film, certain characters need certain actors. This story needed an actor who hadn’t done a full-fledged action film. This is the first time Shahid will be seen in an action avatar. He’s done action in other films but never a pure action movie.
Sonakshi Sinha seems to be your favourite among the actors.
We get along well and enjoy working together. She fit the village-belle like character in the film. Actors believe in me and surrender to my vision. And this works both ways. Like Shahid, Akshay sir and Salman sir also tell me, ‘I’m here, tell me what to do.’ This gesture makes me feel more responsible for them and the film. It is scary.
