Will it be an agent of success?

Hours before the film releases and a day before the reviews appear, here’s our take on what you can expect from this week’s release(s)…

Film: Agent Vinod
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor. The couple makes for great headlines, but flop(py) films. The failure of LOC, Tashan and Kurbaan is still a matter of intrigue for the nation and some producers.
Storyline: A secret agent travels the world on a top-secret mission.

Director
Sriram Raghavan (last directed Johnny Gaddaar in 2007) He’s made only a few films, but they were critically acclaimed. The result of giving him a Saif Ali Khan production, which the actor has had a lot to say about and director not much, is evident in the unimpressive promos.

Music
Pritam
For a change, Pritam bought the rights to Boney M’s popular track ‘Rasputin…’. Just as he was about to sit back and bask in its success, he was pulled up for plagiarising the tune of ‘Pungi…’. While accusations and denials are being made all over the place, we must admit the music’s a hit.

Controversies/stunts
‘They’ say the fistfight at Wasabi worked in Saif’s favour. If he had to go that far to make headlines before the release, we’re requestioning our ‘big films equal big hits’ theory.
Marketing/hype
A graphic novel and a PS3 game were launched.

Our assessment
After being in the making for two long years, the promos look trashy and tampered with. The last big actor-producer film (RA.One) wasn’t encouraging. Let’s hope this is Raghavan’s foray into big budget films and not Saif’s ghost debut as a ghost director. Saif and Kareena may pull in the moolah, but we’d watch it because of our faith in the director. As for it being a fun film, we really doubt that.
