They wrote 21 Bollywood films together, including iconic films like Zanjeer, Deewar and Sholay. Yet, hit script writer duo Salim-Javed split in 1987, over ego issues. In a rare, soon-to-be-aired interview to CNN-IBN’s Rajeev Masand, the duo speak about why they split.

The two of you had your personal reasons for splitting. Did you ever regret the split?
Salim Khan: Nahin, dekheyie kahin na kahin yeh hona hi tha. Every packet has got its expiry date, but the split happened a little prematurely. When I look back, I feel I could have saved it. I totally blame myself for it...

Javed Akhtar: (interrupts Salim) Nahin, what are you saying? Don’t say that...

Salim Khan: No, because I could have averted certain things. When it happened in 1987, almost 25 years back, uss waqt itni maturity nahi thi. Alag ho gaye, but koi aisi dushmani nahin thi. We handled the partition very well, both of us with dignity and self respect. Kisi ne kisiko blame nahi kiya, koi gaali nahi di, press mein kuch nahi kaha. And because of that, when this opportunity came (this interview), we came together. Both of us were sensible enough to keep things to our own selves.

Javed Akhtar: I am very touched and embarrassed. I think it’s extremely magnanimous of him to be so kind, but the fact is that whatever good we have done, we have done it together and if anything went wrong, then that responsibility is also mutual. I think what is important is that till the time we were together, we did some work which is relevant even today. We were the best till we were together and it will remain like that.
