Zanjeer: some things are better left untouched
Hours before the film releases and a day before the reviews appear, here’s what you can expect from this week’s release(s)…bollywood Updated: Sep 06, 2013 10:59 IST
Cast: Ram Charan (Bollywood debut), Priyanka Chopra (last seen in Barfi!; 2012), Sanjay Dutt (last seen in Policegiri), Prakash Raj (last seen in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag) and Mahie Gill (last seen in Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns)
Storyline: Charan reprises Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic role as ACP Vijay Khanna in the quintessential cop drama. Dutt takes over from Pran as Sher Khan, Priyanka is Mala and Mahie Gill is Mona Darling.
Director: Apoorva Lakhia (Last directed Mission Istaanbul: Darr Ke Aagey Jeet Hai!; 2008) Apoorva makes a comeback to the director’s seat after almost five years. His last film, starring non-actor Zayed Khan and barely-seen-actor Vivek Oberoi, opened to negative reviews.
Music: Meet Bros, Anjjan, Chirantan Bhatt, Anand Raj Anand
Priyanka Chopra shot for an number called ‘Pinky’ for this film. Calling the lyrics crass and the music dated would be an understatement. The rest of the soundtrack hasn’t earned many fans either.
The film has been in more than one legal tussle. An issue over the rights to the film’s story (which was originally penned by Salim-Javed) was the most famous one.
This remake has created little buzz. Incidentally, it is pitted against Priyanka’s cousin, Parineeti’s release this weekend. And Shuddh Desi Romance seems to be doing a much better job at grabbing the audience’s attention.
If you’re a fan of the original Prakash Mehra’s Zanjeer (1973), you’re probably thinking the same thing that comes to our mind at the sight of this remake’s trailer — some things are best left untouched. We guess there must be a serious dearth of original stories in the industry.
For the final verdict, look out for Anupama Chopra’s review tomorrow in the Watch & Listen page of Hindustan Times’ Do! section
