A second book of artist Sujata Bajaj was launched in Mumbai on November 21. The glossy book priced at Rs 5000 titled in English – Sujata Bajaj, is an English translation of the French book released in Paris five years ago. Bajaj, born and bought up in Jaipur and then Pune has made a distinct mark for herself in the snobbish French art world holding several exhibitions there.

This retrospective book consists of 203 images of Bajaj’s landmark abstract works and mindscapes, created over the last 25 years and gives a glimpse into the her artistic journey. The book is written by French art critic and writer Michel Waldberg.

“It took Waldberg over two years to work and complete this book. This one is very special as it narrates the story of my art and has been painstakingly created,” said Bajaj.

Bajaj is one of the favourite protégés of veteran artist SH Raza on whose insistence Bajaj moved to Paris to work and study. Art colletor Sangita Jindal visited Bajaj in Paris recently and saw the French version of the book. “It is such a beautiful book. I insisted that the book be released in Mumbai in English.” Jindal held the launch of the book in Mumbai. “Nine years ago, I met Bajaj with SH Raza and Raza introduced me to her telling me that she is one talent to look out for. I have collected several works of Bajaj since then.”

Raza saw Bajaj’s work at an art exhibition in 1980’s, two years after she held er first exhibition in Pune and encouraged her to study in Paris. She now lives there with her French husband and visits India once every year.

Her recent works were exhibited at the Art Alive gallery in Delhi, earlier this month and plans a big art project in Mumbai, coming February.
