When Shahnaz Husain was a little girl, while her ride back home from school, she once ripped off all the purdahs (curtains) of her family car’s windows that held the view of the outside world from her. She grew up to be a woman of undeniable grit, who defied traditions to live her dreams.

Her daughter relates her to a phoenix. “My mom’s like a phoenix that’s reborn from flames. She has been through the worst and yet she has been able to emerge from each crisis, stronger than before,” says Nelofar Currimbhoy, who has penned her mother’s biography — Flame, The Story of My Mother Shahnaz Husain, the only book written on the life of the famous herbal cosmetologist.

Shahnaz is assured that no one could have narrated the story of her life like Nelofar, who has often played mom to her when she battled difficult situations in her life. “No one could have told my story like Nelofar. She has lived through my struggles. There are things about me that I don’t remember, but she does, and has talked about them in the book,” says Shahnaz. It was while flipping through the biography of poet and director Gulzar, written by his daughter, that Shahnaz expressed the desire that her daughter writes a book on her. And that was an inspiring moment for Nelofar. “I thought I will present a different side of mum’s personality that not many people may be aware of. She is very traditional at the heart. Can you believe that till date she hasn’t danced with any other man except my father?” says Nelofar, who believes that her mom’s biography can inspire many dreams. “The book is a self-help book for all those women who have a dream. Married at sixteen and a mother at seventeen, her child was always a priority for her, even when she achieved stardom,” she says.

The book, priced at Rs. 295, is available across all leading book stores.
