How many of us can claim to know about the life story of even one war hero who sacrificed his life for the country? We guess, very few. Now, a new series of graphic novels by Major General Ian Cardozo and Rishi Kumar aims to bring the real life tales of brave Indian soldiers to a whole new generation.
We happened to read the stories of Major Somnath Sharma and Captain Manoj Pandey of 11th Gorkha Rifles in this particular series. Both the stories provide for an easy and quick read, as the illustrations are quite eye-catching. While Major Sharma’s episode shows him sacrificing his life while fighting for the control of Srinagar against Pakistan in October 1947, the current generation can relate more easily to Captain Pandey’s story, as it is quite recent.
Pandey, a Param Vir Chakra recipient, died battling the Pakistani intruders in the Kargil war of 1999. He had valiantly helped his battalion in capturing the Kukar Thang post, Jaubar Top, and the Khalubar Hills during the war. The visuals in both the comics bring the reader right into the action, with well done character sketches as well. This is a good attempt at paying tribute to the real heroes of our nation. Because it comes out in the form of graphic novels, youngsters will also find the series quite engaging.
