Book your shelf
Bookshelves can add class to your room, but make sure they meet the primary purpose of accommodating books.books Updated: Jan 15, 2010 20:28 IST
Looking for a shelf for your pile of books? With new designs and models available in the market, you can get a bookshelf that is both aesthetically done and designed keeping space constraints in mind.
“Book displays by themselves have become a statement of style. From symmetrical to asymmetrical, from straight format to a certain quasi-geometrical format, the bookshelf has seen it all — in aesthetics, in material, in format,” says product designer, Mukul Goyal.
What’s your style?
First things first —your objective of book storage should be met. The size and volume of the shelf should be adequate to fit in the required number of books. Maintaining a sense of balance, seeing how it blends with the rest of the environment and accessibility of pulling out the books are also important considerations.
“As in all furniture designs, over the years, the bookshelf has changed from being wall-to-wall like a lawyer’s office or home library to sleek, open shelves of planks on the wall, either in metal, wood or leather,” says Bobby Aggarwal, Portside Café.
All bookshelves serve a multiple purpose. You can display anything from your trophies and picture frames to lovely artifacts alongside your books.
“There is a wide variety in bookshelves, ranging from space efficient to really elaborate ones. Some of them are multi-functional, offering features such as knick knack displays, lighting, storage, etc.,” says Goyal.
As far as the look is concerned, thick shelves of veneered MDF, painted MDF or pre-laminated boards are some of the more popular materials worldwide, says Meenakshi Goyal, interior designer, Mobel Grace.
