The Goodreads Choice Awards' opening round has begun, with 300 nominations pre-selected by virtue of their popularity but now jostling for a place in the semifinal round.
Titles were plucked from a writhing mass of 170 million new additions based on the number of ratings and the average rating already bestowed upon them by Goodreads' users, who catalogue, rate and share notes on the books they have read.
Twenty GCA categories range from straightforward Fiction and Nonfiction classifications through Horror, Historical and Science Fiction to Paranormal Fantasy, Graphic Novels, Middle Grade & Children's and Cookbooks.
Nominations include This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz, The Walking Dead Vol. 16 by Robert Kirkman, Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel, The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny, This Book is Full of Spiders by David Wong... and yes, E.L. James is in there with Fifty Shades Freed.
The opening round ends on November 10, with semifinal voting from November 12-17, and a seven-day final round finishing on November 27.
