Rajya Sabha MP, Vijay Darda’s, coffee-table book on wildlife and environment, Wildscapes, was launched at the hands of Mukesh Ambani. The 307-page book is a collection of wildlife pictures shot by photographer Baiju Patil in national parks and sanctuaries.

Says Darda, “Being a Jain, love and compassion for animals was part of my upbringing. As a social worker and an MP, I have worked to stop slaughterhouses. I was very interested in nature and wildlife from my childhood since I lived and grew up very close to large forests. I also had a keen interest in photography growing up.”

During his tenure in Parliament, Darda has taken up the issue of wildlife conservation several times thereby drawing attention to pertinent topics and even forcing changes in the legislation. He adds, “Through my media group, I had assigned high priority to this subject and instructed my editorial team to fight any attempt to destroy flora and fauna at any level. I can say that we have sincerely worked towards that and saved several habitats.”

Speaking at the launch, Ambani revealed his youngest son Anant’s interest in wildlife photography. Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel, told the gathering how Shiv Sena executive president, Uddhav Thackeray, regularly takes helicopter rides outside the city, to shoot wildlife pictures.
