As the clock ticks, authors from four countries will write one novel in 24 hours today.

Initiated by Spread the Word, a London based agency, the international 24 hour book project will see authors come together on Google docs to write a  40,000 words novel in 24 hours. Four teams of writers, each  from Kuala Lumpur, Delhi, London and Vancouver, will work simultaneously on the same Google doc and at the end of it , hopefully a novel will emerge which will be launched as an e-book on World Book Day on 1st March.

Nirupama Subramaniam, one of the writers from the Delhi team, can’t contain her excitement about the project, “Writers are normally solitary creatures, who pour over their world processor. It would be great step out of the comfort zone to learn from other writers, see where their ideas come from, how writers go about their craft. It would also be an exciting opportunity to experiment with different styles of writing with writers across cultures.”

The project is deliberately scheduled for 29th February to entertain the idea of an ‘extra day’. The teams have been given a broad structure and each team is responsible for one character.

Subramaniam explains, “Each team is working on a character; the Delhi team is working on one character – the background story, the dialogues, the present, all the characters will meet at one place. We don’t know what will happen next, the final story will be collaborative effort. It will be like driving down a typical Delhi road – there will be jams, chaos , you would think you’ll never reach the destination but miraculously things fall in place and some kind of structure will emerge.”

How to be a part of this unique project?

If you’re keen to contribute to this project, you can tweet your answer to this question What would you do with an extra day? @STWevents, with #24hourbook hashtag. You can also post your idea of the Facebook page of Spread The Word. All the ideas will be read by the participating writers, and your idea might even influence the theme of the book.
