The new six-issue series "Plants vs. Zombies: Lawnmageddon" starts off with a free digital download via the Dark Horse Comics app for iOS and Android.

Based on the antics of perennial mobile, web and video game "Plants vs. Zombies," series mainstay Crazy Dave will be on hand as niece Patrice and young adventurer Nate are tasked with stopping the undead (or, in "PvZ" parlance, the "fun-dead") from taking over the neighborhood.

Issue one is available now, while the rest come in at $0.99 each, released every two weeks. A hardcover collection is due November 6.

The comic, a first for Plants vs. Zombies, is part of a ramping up to the mass dispersal of "Plants vs. Zombies 2," which is already subject to limited release via the Australia and New Zealand App Store, and "Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare" on the Xbox One video game console.

Both Dark Horse and Plants vs. Zombies will have booths at the San Diego Comic-Con, July 18-21, at which attendees will be able to find limited edition print versions of issue 1.
