The Chicken Soup for the Soul series has, since 1993, published more than 200 titles with over 500 million copies in print. And co-creator author Jack Canfield attributes its success to a lot of factors, several of which he’s even discussed in his new book, The Success Principles.

“I wanted to write a book that would contain the most important, powerful and time-tested principles and strategies for success that could be applied in any situation,” says the author, adding that he’s read over 3,000 books and attended hundreds of seminars to compile principles that worked best for him and those he had coached. “I then interviewed 75 of the most successful people in the United States — generals in the army, top business leaders, successful actors and songwriters, bestselling authors, top athletes, multi-millionaire entrepreneurs, and successful managers and sales people — to make sure the principles were universal.”

The result is what Jack describes as a success bible, comprising 64 principles and their accompanying strategies that he feels can work in any situation. A case in point? Principle 5, which he applied directly to Chicken Soup’s winning formula.

“It says, do five specific action steps each day to move towards the completion of a goal. So every day for the 14 months before we hit the New York Times bestseller list we’d make five phone calls to newspapers to review the book or send out five free copies of the book to

reviewers,” says Jack, adding that there were many such steps that contributed to the success. He even stresses on the importance of positive

visualisation for preventing physical illness.

Keep in mind

Anyone with a successful mindset needs to accept personal responsibility for every aspect of their existence including their income, fitness, debts, feelings and relationships.

Make a list of the times in your life when you’ve felt most alive and joyful. Then try to identify a pattern that connects those events. That pattern points towards your purpose.

What’s your objective? Simply write down 30 things you want to do, 30 things you want to have and 30 things you want to be before you die. This is a great way to start giving momentum to your vision.

Researchers are finding that as we mature the brain tends to base its responses on past experiences with expectancy of a similar outcome. So it would seem that there is truly a benefit to having a positive, can-do-attitude to accomplish the success goals that you have in life.

Believing in yourself is a choice, or an attitude that you have to have regardless of past circumstances. It is up to each of us to not let that negativity cripple our present and future successes.
