Fifty million copies of The Hunger Games series have been distributed in both print and e-book formats across the US, with nearly half of those for the eponymous first book in the trilogy.

The number, which was disclosed as part of publisher Scholastic's quarterly earnings report, is a significant increase on the 36 million posted in March, just days after The Hunger Games' cinematic debut, although that figure didn't include e-books in its calculations.

As things stand now, The Hunger Games (released 2008) accounts for 23 million copies of the 50 million combined total, Catching Fire (2009) for 14 million, and Mockingjay (2010) for 13 million.

For comparison, the four core books to Stephanie Meyer's hit Twilight series, released annually between 2005 and 2008, were followed by film releases between November 2008 and November 2011; the novels had accumulated 100 million worldwide sales between them by November 2009, with 27 million of those coming in 2009 following Twilight's cinematic debut.
