If not a golfer, what would you have been?
I don’t know what I would have done. Perhaps, under family pressure, I would have taken the civil services exams.
What are your memories of emerging triumphant at the Scottish Open this year?
Winning is always an amazing feeling. I think the golfing gods were on my side, particularly during the time when I holed that 16-foot putt on the 18th hole.
What are your thoughts about the biopic being made on your father’s [Flying Sikh Milkha Singh] life?
It is a fantastic moment, not just for me but for the family too. Once the people watch the film, the entire country will be proud of him.
Your favourite sports films?
Chariots of Fire, and now, the forthcoming Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will be fantastic. Simply watching the first cut gave me goose bumps!
What do the Shubhkamna Champions mean to you?
It is an honour to have a tournament based on my name and hosted by me. I believe it is a first in India.
Your fitness routine?
Yoga in the morning for 40 minutes, warming up and hitting the golf ball for 90 minutes. In the evening, yoga and mental training once again. Also, push-ups and weight training thrice a week.
The biggest risk you’ve taken?
Nothing in particular. But normally, boarding flights on time when connections are less than 45 minutes apart. One piece of advice you wish someone had given you 10 years ago. To stay healthy and play injury-free. Athletes believe no injury is going to come to them and tend to forget their age too.
Do you enjoy playing or watching any other sport?
No. I only love watching Hollywood and Bollywood films.

The best country to play a golf tournament in.
The United States.
You have three minutes to pack. What do you take with you?
Six pairs of trousers, six T-shirts, six pairs of socks and shoes, my medicines and a golf bag.
How do you train for a big tournament?
I do yoga and lot of mental training.
Your strategy in a crisis situation?
Be patient, stay calm. Don’t think from the heart, think from the brain.
