A trip down Bollywood's A-rated alley

Nobody’s talking about Sunny Leone in Ek Paheli Leela. But there was a time when sex scenes in Bollywood made waves – people talked about them forever and ever. We’re not rooting for those days to return, but here’s a trip down that A-rated alley.

Dayavan - Vinod Khanna and Madhuri Dixit

This 1988 film is iconic, and quite ahead of its time: very realistic sex. We’re talking about Madhuri and Vinod Khanna getting to know each other like good Indian newlyweds do. Even though he looked old enough to be her papa.

Jism – Bipasha Basu and John Abraham

When Bipasha Basu (the hottest thing in Bollywood at the time) said, "Ye jism pyaar karna nahin jaanta. Jaanta hai toh sirf bhookh. Jism ki bhookh", in 2003, the whole country practically swooned.

Murder – Mallika Sherawat and Emraan Hashmi

It was 2004, and Mallika Sherawat was saying the most ridiculous things on television. The headlines she made though were for the 13 kissing scenes in this pedestrian adaptation of Unfaithful. FYI, this film kick-started Mr Hashmi’s illustrious serial-kisser legacy.

Band Baaja Baaraat – Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh

At the time of its release in 2010, it was called the most "mature" sex scene to emerge out of Bollywood in a while. Their kiss looked so natural, but may be because it just was so.

Some sex scenes just befuddle us though

Tu Mile Dil Khile’ (Criminal, 1995):

A beautiful song, no doubt. But nobody associates it with the video anymore. There are satin sheets and Manisha Koirala in ridiculous satin pyjamas.

In The Night No Control’ (Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, 1996):
The song that starts with this line: “Even naughty girls need love.” A gyrating Rekha with Khiladi Kumar. Frolicking in the mud. We have been told (by some people with questionable tastes and reputations) that it was sexy in the Nineties, but we fell off the sofa laughing. And then forwarded the video to all our friends with the subject line, “Yaar, you have got to watch this!”

Where’s The Party Tonight?’ (Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna, 2006):
In SRK and Rani’s hotel room, apparently. But, SHE WAS CRYING WHILE THEY DID IT. #Facepalm

Those taking life lessons from Bollywood, please note:

Wearing a sari and getting wet under a waterfall will not necessarily lead to coitus. Unless you’re Mandakini from Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985).
