Chances are you haven’t heard of Ram Gopal Varma’s Raat. Chances are that you have heard of Bhoot by the same director. Well, Bhoot is just a subtler, sweeter remake of Raat. RGV admits it, Raat is blood-curdling. And I watched it when I was nine. It was 1996. The opening scene is terrifying – Revathy is chased by unseen demons as she steps out of her school bus. She is then possessed by a malevolent presence in her house and ends up killing her best friend by twisting her neck completely around.

Remember that scene in Bhoot where the watchman is killed in a similar fashion by Urmila? And don’t even bother looking straight into Revathy’s glassy eyes, you might just get possessed. Then there’s the younger brother who can see things. And the freeze-frame finale involves a demonic undead cat. It’s RGV’s most underrated film – watch it.
