An aspiring model to a ramp choreographer, a successful businesswoman to being the director of INIFD — all of Priyanka Khosla’s dreams had seen the light of the day, except one; that of launching her own fashion label. “In 1994, my husband and I organised various fashion shows, including a seven-city series in Punjab that included cities like Jalandhar, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.
Though pageants for married women and children are being popularised now, I organised Lady of the Year in 1996 and a fashion show for kids, Cute Walk,” says Priyanka, at the launch of her western wear designer label, Priyanka Khosla, in Sector 8.
So, why now, after being so close to the field for so many years? “As a businesswoman, I had a lot of commitments. At 44, I realised I can’t wait anymore.”
With the aim of providing exclusivity, Priyanka says, “Since people have started socialising a lot these days, they need exclusive clothes, a concept that isn’t famous in Chandigarh. Even brands like Zara or Mango don’t provide exclusivity, and don’t you just hate it when you end up wearing the same dress as someone else at a party?”
The label offers party gowns, dresses, peplums and shift dresses. “I haven’t designed anything run-of-the-mill. I have reserved a separate section for whites and gold and another for blacks in different fabrics. The price range starts at R4,500 and goes up to R13,000. My clothes are not for the masses. It’s for women like me who are not comfortable in suits even at this age, besides young girls, of course.”
Next on her cards are wedding gowns, as she says, “Chandigarh doesn’t offer a place to buy elegant wedding or formal gowns. I’ll soon start making customised gowns as well.”
