Many medicinal plants rejuvenate the nervous system by repairing damaged brain cells. These are nature's cure of everything from alleviating anxiety to boosting memory, writes Shikha Sharma.

Herbs are nature's gift for treating several illnesses. Before the advent of modern medicine, herbs were the standard treatment given to those in distress around the world. The efficacy of herbal medicines has been tried and tested for hundreds of years.

In part two of the series on herbs, here's a look at a few popular medicinal herbs:

Brain Boost: Brahmi is often used for nerves and to enhance memory.Brahmi: It is used in several preparations in ayurvedic products meant for nerves and to enhance memory. According to the classical texts, it is beneficial for the cerebral system. It also acts as an anti-depressant.

YashtiMadhu: The classical herb has been known to help relieve stress. It also pacifies anger and alleviates anxiety-related stress symptoms.

Ashwagandha: It is an excellent adaptogen (a plant extract that increases the body's ability to resist the damaging effects of stress) and reduces nervous tension. It also rejuvenates the cerebral tissue and benefits memory enhancement.

Shankhpushpi: Used since Vedic times in India as a memory tonic as well as mental-stress reliever, the herb finds favour with many students. Shankhpushpi even finds mention in the classical texts as medha dravya or brain tonic.

Vacha: The roots of this herb contain active compounds that protect the nerves from damage and also nourish the nervous system.

St John's Wort: Popular for countering anxiety disorders, this flowering plant has been used in Western botanicals and naturopathy for years. In some cases, taking the herb appeared to alleviate anxiety symptoms within two weeks.

Dose to doze: Valerian helps in treating anxiety and insomnia.Giloy: The herb is known to rejuvenate the nervous system by repairing damaged brain cells. In ayurveda, it is referred to as an amrit for its medicinal properties and anti-arthritic benefits.

Valerian: This root has long been used in Western natural medicine for patients of anxiety and insomnia. Many people use the herb when they are trying to get off sleeping pills. It is also combined with herbs such as hops for treating insomnia and mental fatigue.
