A lot has been written about being positive and the benefits of a positive outlook. But most people are stumped because they are unsure of how to achieve it. What I have put together is a method given by many gurus, which I have found to be helpful.
We get thousands of thoughts in a day. The basic idea is to recognise that we are capable of all kinds of thoughts and also capable of choosing from them to pay attention to a specific positive one.
So, the first step to a positive outlook is to be more attentive to thoughts that create a positive sensation. As we become more attentive to such positive thoughts and ignore the negative ones, we create an anchor of positive feelings. The next step is to convert this mind circuit into a solid path, by creating a powerful force called habit.
Slow down mental chatter
At all times, we have a constant mental chatter in our head which does not allow us to function in a productive fashion. A practical method to slow down this chatter is to become a witness to it rather than a participant.
Doing this is simple – because if we look back, we will find that we keep having conversations with ourselves mentally. We are capable of witnessing our mind’s conversations. Once we can do this, simply take a deep breath and exhale slowly… you will be surprised to observe the slowing down of this chatter.
Why don’t we do this?
Many times, we are trapped in a mindset, what I call being the director of other people’s actions. Trying to change others looks easy, but in reality is next to impossible. Changing oneself seems very tough, but this is the only thing possible.
When we get out of trying to change other people and begin to focus on what we can change within ourselves, this is the next step towards being positive.
