If we had to hand out fashion awards to award nights

Cannes

We love movies, and music, and pop-culture in general. But every time the world’s most creative get together to celebrate the best works of the year, we can’t stop gawking at the clothes: who wears who (and how much they pay for it, or get for free), who turns paparazzi’s heads, and who ends up becoming a meme.

So before the 69th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, here’s a guide to what most award nights look like...

The Cannes

Awarded: The Most Fashionable

Why: Because Cannes is more synonymous with red carpet sightings now than its great lineup of films. Also, it’s so multicultural. And India’s favourite of the lot – because our desi starlets make a beeline for it every year. We’re only too happy to follow what Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been wearing for the last 14 editions of Cannes.

The Oscars

Awarded: The Most Conservative

Why: Some of the most expensive gowns have been seen at the Academy Awards (Cate Blanchett wore a $2,00,000 Armani Prive outfit once. That could buy you a gorgeous house in a metro). But it’s also the most traditional: Tuxedos for the men, floor-length gowns for the ladies. A train here, a peek of cleavage there. Younger stars are slowly breaking the stereotype though – Priyanka Chopra wore a bold white sheer number while Jennifer Lawrence dared to bare in sexy black this year.

The Met Gala

Awarded: The Quirkiest

Why: Remember Rihanna’s Guo Pei yellow dress with its mile-long train that launched a zillion memes. Some added pizza toppings to it, others likened it to an omelette. Or Katy Perry’s colour changing dress that actually lit up. Or Beyonce’s flesh-toned latex Givenchy dress last week. The Met Gala is now fashion’s most coveted event, guests get a theme every year. And to think that it is simply a fundraising ball for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute!

The Golden Globes

Awarded: The one that officially starts off the red carpet season

For: Just that. Stars wear great gowns all right, but nothing remarkable ever happens at the Golden Globes red carpet – other than some vague singer or actress trying to grab the limelight with a daring number here and there. Being the first award night of the year, one that recognises excellence in TV and films, it sets the tune for the biggies to follow in the coming months – the Oscars and the Cannes.

The MTV VMA

Awarded: The Most Outrageous

For: The most number of controversies on and off the stage, and the most eye-popping outfits on and off the red carpet, such as Miley Cyrus wrecking ball on stage and walking the red carpet in what looked like a chandelier! Even the men go wacky, like Jeremy Scott turning up in a yellow tuxedo, or Will.I.Am in an intergalactic suit!
