Edward and Bella ruined vampires for men, women and everybody except silly little teenage girls. But True Blood came in the form of a delicious revenge and reinstated the Pale Ones to their former glory. You can’t not watch it.
The plot: Not a high-school drama! This is cold, vengeful and territorial Louisiana. It’s about the secret world of vampires who battle each other, humans and other dark creatures for control of the world. And for blood.
The variety of characters: Vampires, known for their cold skin and no heart. Werewolves, secretive and highly dangerous. Werepanthers who survive on meth, inbreeding and crime. Shapeshifters, who tend to end up naked a lot. Faeries, who have beauty, intelligence and strange powers – and mate a lot. Plus, necromancers and witches to raise the dead. No zombies, yet.
The stunning female cast: This show takes fantasy to another level. The Red Riding Hood with fangs: Jessica. The hot telepath faerie who can read your mind and whose blood is irresistible to vampires: Sookie. The Old European Catholic vampire (if you don’t beg, she bites): Violet. The vampire in corsets, hot pinks and angry snarls: Pam.
The sex: The bedroom scenes with Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer will get you going. It has even won awards for its sex scenes!
The gore: In a family-friendly kitchen shot, a maenad (Mary Ann) is sautéing vegetables. She picks up a freshly-ripped human heart, feels its tenderness, slices it up and tosses it into her soufflé.
The great music: It’s all Southern tunes and innuendo. The opening track, Bad Things, describes the essence of True Blood: "Before this night is through I am going to do real bad things to you!"
