He has been television’s favourite beta, literally; or if Zee Rishtey Awards are to go by. Now, the beta is venturing into a new genre, by doing Hum Aapke Hain In-laws on Sab TV.

Small-screen actor Karan Grover, better known to us as Karan Prasad from Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli, was at JW Marriott, Sector 35, to talk about his upcoming show on Sab TV.

This being the actor’s first visit to Chandigarh, Karan expresses regret over the lack of time for siteseeing. He does, however, know about ‘those delicious shakes’ available opposite Hotel Mountview! “I’ve heard so much about those shakes from people in Mumbai,” exclaims he.

Getting down to business, he talks about his character in Yahan Mai Ghar Ghar Kheli. “The fact that my character was named Karan worked in my favour. This way, I connected with audience all over the country. The biggest satisfaction, however, came during my LA visit to Universal Studios, where people recognised me!”

Disclosing the name of his character on the new comedy show, he says, “I’m playing the role of Gulshan Grover. It’s incidental that my character’s first or last name is always the same as mine. But, this is the first time I am trying my hand at comedy. What I do know is that making people laugh is not easy.”

Sharing his nine-year-long journey in the entertainment industry, Karan says, “Before I got into acting, I was a chemical engineer; a very bad one at that! That’s why I never landed a job as an engineer. So, I changed my line completely and started working with Omang Kumar’s event management company. The next step was to participate in Mr India 2004, where I emerged as one of the five top finalists. It was after that, that I found my first job as a VJ with Zee music. I was camera shy initially, but after I got my first break as an actor on Star Plus (for the show Saarthi) there was no looking back.”

So, is he planning to go down the B-Town road? “I do get a lot of offers from Bollywood; nothing as good as what I have on the small screen yet. But, I do thank television actors and friends Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh, who have managed to set an example for us. They did a fabulous job in Kai Po Che!

About his dream director and role, Karan says, “My dream role would be that of James Bond; I would love to do a spy comedy. The director I would love to work with is Anurag Kashayap, I believe I can fit the Dev D type script well.”

The joy of confusion

After playing a negative character in three serials — Pavitra Rishta (Zee TV), Beend Banoongaa Ghodi Chadhunga (Imagine TV) and Ek Doosre Se Karte Hain Pyaar Hum (Star Plus) — Pooja Pihal is finally essaying a bubbly character in her next serial, Hum Aapke Hain In-Laws on Sab TV.

Talking about the lighthearted show, the Delhi girl says, “The role of Damini Grover would make people fall in love with me. Damini and Gulshan (Karan) are surrounded by their in-laws, who bacuse of their unconditional love end up interfering the couple’s private lives. While the doting in-laws strive to make life simple for us, they end up complicating it further!”
