India's leading personal computer maker Hewlett-Packard is betting big on its new series of tablets to be launched next month with prices ranging from Rs 20,000-Rs 60,000.

Demand for tablets has outstripped that of laptops and desktops in recent times, a trend that the company says would continue at least for the next 18 months. At present, HP only sells the ElitePad G1 tablet, but with a Rs 57,499 price tag it caters to the premium end of the market.

"We will come up with a range of tablets next month as we believe that in the next year and a half there will be absolutely rapid growth in this segment," said Rajiv Srivastava, president, HP India. "This market is yet to mature."

HP has a 34% marketshare in the personal computer segment in India but has so far missed out on the rapidly expanding tablet market.

The firm, however, said it would stay clear of smartphones, another potentially high growth segment. Its main rivals like Samsung, Dell and Lenovo already have smartphone in their global portfolio.
