Christine Lagarde, Minister for Foreign Trade

Born in Paris of academic parents on January 1, 1956, Christine Lagarde attended secondary school in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) and has degrees from the Institute of Political Studies (IEP) and from the Law School of Paris X University.


She has a post-graduate diploma (DESS) in labour law, a Master's degree in English and a diploma from Holton Arms School in Bethesda (USA).

Christine Lagarde lectured at Paris-X Law School before joining Baker & McKenzie Paris in 1981.

Christine Lagarde was Chairman of Baker & McKenzie's Global Policy Committee from October 2004 to June 2005. Before then, she chaired Baker & McKenzie's Global Executive Committee from October 1999 to October 2004. Lawyer with the Paris Bar specialising in anti-trust and labour law, Christine Lagarde had been a partner with Baker & McKenzie Paris since 1987 and served as Managing Partner from 1991 to 1995, when she was elected to the Global Executive Committee.

The mother of two children, Christine Lagarde has been awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.
