HSCC has been trying to diversify its service portfolio

HSCC, a Mini Ratna public sector undertaking (PSU) set up in 1983, is one of the few organisations in India and South East Asia, which renders a comprehensive range of professional consultancy services in development of healthcare infrastructure and other allied areas. Over the last 28 years, HSCC has been providing design, engineering and project management services for various prestigious projects in India and abroad. Its chairman and managing director VC Sharma spoke to Hindustan Times on a range of issues. Excerpts:

How has HSCC been growing in the recent years?
HSCC has been continuously making a profit for the last 26 years and paying dividends.  The PSU has been able to maintain an all round progress in its activities thereby attaining the highest ever total income of Rs. 33.46 crore during financial year 2010-11. This year it has declared a dividend of 72% of paid up capital. In addition to this, our reserves and surplus and networth have also touched all time high of Rs. 76.31 crore and Rs. 78.72 crore respectively.

What are its main areas of operation?
HSCC provides consultancy services in healthcare infrastructure development projects such as feasibility studies, architectural planning, design and engineering, project management, procurement management and training of personnel.

What major projects are being  undertaken by HSCC now?
We have undertaken the upgradation and setting up of more than 40 hospitals in Punjab, master plan and renovation of out-patient departments (OPDs), car parking, facilitation block and associated blocks at AIIMS, New Delhi, comprehensive redevelopment plan for Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, upgradation of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health, Tezpur, Assam, Veterinary Ayurveda Research Institute, Lucknow, North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Homeopathy, Shillong, Hospital Complex at Dickoya, Sri Lanka, project management consultancy for All India Medical Ayurveda Institute of Sarita Vhar, New Delhi, and detailed project report for upgradation of National Institute of Communicable Diseases to National Centre for Disease Control, among other initiatives.

Any plans for diversification?
HSCC has been continuously working towards increasing its domain by diversification of its service portfolio. Some new areas which has been identified include providing building engineering maintenance services to clients who we have given comprehensive project management services. We also plan to provide consultancy related to Public Private Partnership (PPP) in development of infrastructure project, design, engineering of non-hospital and non-medical building campuses and complexes, efforts for expansion of international business in South East Asia, SAARC countries and Africa.

Has the company taken up any CSR initiatives?
As part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives during the last financial year, we donated R4.30 lakhs to an NGO - Indian Cancer Society (ICS) for distribution of drugs and pharmaceuticals to needy patients.
