Not every one can promise to be cheaper than every other telecom operator in the country, make voice calls free forever, and offer more data at the same price than every one else.

But, Mukesh Ambani, the richest Indian, and chairman of Reliance Industries, owner of Reliance Jio, is different.

While Ambani, whose free data offering has started a price war, said that Reliance Jio will start charging for its services, but not before he hurts his rival more.

“Last few months a lot of tariff plans have been launched, which has caused data and value anxiety. Jio will monitor all publically announced plan for all operators across the country on a regular basis… At Jio we will not only match the highest selling tariff of each of the telecom operators... but provide 20% more data for all those plans,” said Ambani.

He added that consumers will no longer have to worry about tariffs. “It is Jio’s solemn promise to always offer better value for the best price,”Ambani said.

That would mean, a Jio user will always pay less than what any user on any other network pays. Add to that, Ambani promised that voice calls will always be free on the Jio network.

All these are to keep the momentum of its fast-gaining consumer share going (Jio has crossed 100 million subscribers). Jio, since its launch has added seven customer, every second, every day. Its users consume 200 crore minutes of voice and video calls.

Ambani added that Jio users consumed more than 100 crore GB of data. “Today India is the number one country in the world in mobile data usage,” he said.

To put things in context, Jio users consume more data than all of America put together, and 50% more than that of China.

Ambani is a master at marketing. He calls his first-100 million users “Jio ambassadors”, “co-founders of Jio movement”, and announced special benefits for them, in form of “Jio Prime memberships”.

Just like Amazon Prime, a Jio Prime user will have to pay a membership money of Rs 99 and enjoy all its services, such as continuing with the freebies of the Happy New Year offer, for the next one year.

“Whoever is with Jio, will have the most benefits in the coming days... Jio prime members can enjoy the unlimited benefits for another 12 months until March 31, 2018,” Ambani said.

That’s not the end. “We will offer more offers for Jio Prime members -- the full bouquet of media services worth Rs 10,000 completely free for the next one year,” was Ambani’s icing on the cake.
