“I don’t know of any institution, whether it’s a company or a state that has made consistent progress unless you have strong competent and altruistic leaders. We have to look towards having such leaders,” he said, adding “we must have leaders and citizens who believe in meritocracy, people who believe in finding solutions and solving problems.”

He said resources can be mobilised “if you have quality leaders.”

IT plays a vital role in contributing to quality of city systems. “You need IT to monitor growth, revenue and expenses, health care, education and nutrition levels. IT is at the heart of everything.”

The winner of the Quality of Life  and Quality of city systems award was Surat Ramesh Ramanthan, co-founder, Janaagraha. He said, “With this city systems framework, we measure different aspects of Indian cities, and compare them to others. We believe unless urban planning and design, urban capacities and resources, empowered and legitimate political representation and transparency, accoutnability and participation are addressed, we cannot get sustainable change in our cities”.

Gold is glittering this Dhanteras

Last year, there was a supply crunch of gold in the market after the government hiked its import duty to 15% to curb higher import as that was causing imbalance in the current account deficit in the country.
