Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL), India's largest pig iron producer and exporter, has now gone for production of steel billets at it complex in Kalinganagar in Odisha's Jajpur district.

NINL - a joint venture of the central government undertaking Mines and Minerals Trading Corporation (MMTC) and Odisha government undertakings Industrial Promotion Company Limited (IPICOL) and Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) - commissioned its steel melting shop (SMS) at the complex on March 31.

NINL managing director SP Patnaik said the SMS plant was expected to produce 0.9 million tonnes of steel billets. "With operational discipline at SMS, NINL will be a low cost producer of steel very soon, thereby meeting the demand of domestic as well as export markets" Patnaik said.

At present, NINL has an annual turnover of Rs 2000 and production of 6 lakh tonnes of pig iron. With the addition of SMS plant, the turnover would increase to Rs 3000 crore, he said.
