A team of senior aviation ministry officials are visiting Amsterdam and San Diego to examine how these cities handle “city-side security” at airports.

The visit comes in the backdrop of the Aerocity project being developed by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) near the IGI airport.

DIAL is the private operator of the Delhi airport. The home ministry had raised security concerns over the Aerocity project — the hospitality district comprising five-star hotels — and had warned that sabotage could be undertaken, targetting aircraft and runways.

DIAL said the Aerocity is planned as per the original master plan developed in line with the Operation, Management and Development Agreement (signed with AAI) norms and falls outside the operational area of IGI airport.

The five member team comprises two aviation officials and an official each from Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, Airports Authority of India and Delhi Police.

“City-side security and aviation security are two different things. The purpose of the trip it to examine how developed countries manage city-side security at hotels,” an official said.
