A day after Air India slashed fares by nearly 50% for advance bookings, Jet Airways also launched a similar scheme for tickets booked at least 60 days before the date of travel, starting Thursday.

While the Jet scheme did not show all-inclusive one-way fares for economy class travel such as the national carrier, travel agents said the fares were about 30% less than the normal rates.

For instance, one-way economy class trip on the Mumbai-Delhi sector was available for approximately Rs. 4,900, compared to the normal rate of Rs. 7,000.

Travel experts said such offers would benefit travellers owing to the upcoming holiday season and airlines that have been witnessing losses.

“On an average, Indian carriers have passenger volume of 70-80% which indicates that at least 20% capacity is left unused,” said Vikram Malhi, country head of travel portal Expedia (India).

He added that such discounts trigger a lot of bookings and the year is likely to witness more such offers that will give the consumer respite from the high airfares.
