Tata-SIA Airlines Ltd (TSAL), the joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, on Tuesday announced the brand name of its new airline — Vistara.

Vistara has been derived from Sanskrit ‘Vistaar’, which means ‘limitless expanse’, and draws inspiration from the brand’s domain — the ‘limitless’ sky.

The Delhi-headquartered airline, a 51:49 JV between Tata Sons and SIA, is expected to start operations in October 2014. It will take delivery of its first plane, an Airbus A320, in September and plans to have a fleet of five aircraft by December and to raise its fleet to 20 by the end of the fifth year of operation.

Vistara, a full-service carrier, will enter the market at a time when all except one Indian airline (IndiGo) is bleeding. It will take on Jet Airways and Air India, both of whom have posted huge losses.

“Vistara will redefine the way we travel in India,” said Prasad Menon, chairman, TSAL.

“We are in the last lap of the process of securing air operator permit,” said CEO Phee Teik Yeoh.

The airline’s logo is derived from a ‘yantra’, a perfect mathematical form that reflects the universe. The eight-pointed star at the centre of the logo reflects the high standards Vistara is committed to and the excellence that will be a hallmark of the airline.
