TCIL, a prime engineering and consulting company, is a public sector enterprise under the administrative control of the Department of Telecommunications. Set up in 1978 for providing expertise in all fields of telecom to developing countries. Its chairman and managing director R.K. Upadhyay spoke to HT on a range of issues. Excerpts:
How has been the financial performance of the company for the year 2009-2010?
As per the provisional results, the group turnover of the company has increased by 139 per cent from Rs.646.67 crore in 2006-2007 to Rs.1548.44 crore in 2009-2010. Standalone turnover has increased by 74 per cent from Rs.410.61 crore in 2006-07 to Rs.712.56 crore in 2009-2010. The group profit has increased by 403 per cent from Rs.46.45 crore in 2006-2007 to Rs.233.47 crore in 2009-2010 and the standalone profit has risen by 136 per cent from Rs.5.94 crore in 2006-2007 to Rs.14.02 crore in 2009-2010.
In how many countries TCIL is currently working?
TCIL is currently working in about 45 countries in Middle East, Africa and the SAARC region. Important among them are Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Ethiopia, Senegal, Mauritius, Ghana, Nigeria, Nepal, and Bhutan.
What is the present status of government-funded Pan African e-Network project for Tele-medicine and Tele-education being executed by TCIL as Turnkey Implementing Agency?
The Network has already been implemented in 33 African countries and more than 1,000 students are undergoing various courses offered by Indian universities on the Network. The Network is also being used extensively for Continued Medical Education and Tele-Medical Consultation.
What are the major challenges faced by TCIL?
Real challenge is how to improve one’s method of working, how to improve project execution so that there is no time overrun, no cost overrun because this is the only way for any organisation to progress ....
What are the kind of training services that TCIL provides?

Technology is advancing very fast and with a view to keep updated with the latest technology TCIL undertakes training activities either through its own resources.
